Hilldav History

For over 45 years Hilldav has been selling its range of Etching Presses, which are now made by ABC Light Engineering. The range of Etching Presses are suitable for Metal Plate, Wood Block and Lino printing.

Hilldav started life making pottery kilns in 1974; we made a range of pottery kilns for both pottery and industry. About the same time we started making Etching Presses. Using traditional bottom roller drive but with modern materials.

We started in a small workshop but as we expanded, we soon moved to a factory in Old Toongabbie where we stayed until 2013.

In 2013 we discontinued production at the Old Toongabbie site and have moved to a smaller site to continue support and repairs for Kilns and Presses.

Small Model Presses – Perfect for Students and Schools

These small compact presses that are available in either DIRECT DRIVE or GEAR REDUCTION DRIVE. These are also available in either Bench Mounted or supplied with Stand, and optional extra Lockable Castors for the stand. This makes moving them about so much easier, so that they can be put away when not in use.

These presses are driven by a 660 mm (26”) diameter Hand Wheel. This wheel gives easy operation while maintaining “feel” for the plate passing through the roller.

The Bed plate is manufactured from Black Laminate which gives high compressive strength, is durable, light weight and dose not constitute the same danger of injury that a steel bed plate does. The bed is supported on adjustable supports and has a retaining strap to help prevent the falling hazard. A clear Acrylic Layout Sheet is provided with each press.

The Top and Bottom Roller is made from heavy gauge machined steel, with self-aligning ball bearings. The Top roller is 114 mm 4 1⁄4” diameter machined and ground to high standard of finish.

The Hand Wheel is 660 mm (26″) diameter.

DIRECT DRIVE MODELS. Driven by the Hand Wheel which connects directly to the bottom roller.

GEAR REDUCTION DRIVE. Reduction Drive presses use a roller chain drive, this has the advantage over a gear wheel because the chain wraps around the sprocket. Giving a ratio of 2.5:1. This makes it easier to drive the bed through the roller.

Large Model Presses

The Larger model Direct Drive press is an inexpensive light duty press on which larger work can be produced. They have the size of some of the Semi Professional model presses with a lower price range.

The Large model Direct drive presses are available only in direct drive, where the Hand wheel is connected directly to the bottom roller. The Larger model Direct Drive presses can be either Bench mounted or come with a stand. A set of heavy-duty lockable castors can be fitted to the stand. This is very handy to move the press out of the way when not being used.

The Top Roller is 114 mm 4 1⁄2” diameter high standard of finish.

The Bottom Roller is 89 mm 3 1⁄2” diameter coarse machined.

Semi-professional Model Presses with Gear Reduction Drive, Heavy Duty Shaft and Bearings

This press is for serous print makers, they are all Reduction Drive with a gear Ratio of 3:1. This gear reduction using roller chain from the hand wheel to the bottom roller requires less effort to drive the bed through the rollers. The press comes with heavy duty shafts and bearings and come on a stand with Castors as standard.

Professional Model Presses with Double Reduction Drive, Heavy Duty Shafts and Bearings

These are a much larger range of presses, built using Hilldav’s unique design. They are used by Professional Print Makers, Colleges of TAFE and Universities.

This range of presses has a large Hand Wheel of 1,016 mm (40”) diameter driving through Double reduction gearing with a ratio of 16:1 to the Bottom Roller giving the operator the best touch and feel of the work as it passes through the rollers. Both the top and bottom roller are 216 mm 8 1⁄2” diameter. The top roller is fine machined, while the bottom roller is Coarse machined. The bed plate has adjustable bearings for both height and guidance.
